SUMMARY:The Unsolved Murder of Dr Helen Davidson
DESCRIPTION:On 9 November 1966\, local GP Dr Helen Davidson was murdered in Hodgemoor Woods. On the exact date of the 60th anniversary of the unsolved crime\, this talk looks at Helen Davidson’s life before the tragic murder\, the murder and how it was reported\, the possible suspects and the murder’s long term effect on policing in Buckinghamshire. Speaker Pete Healy was a 16-year-old teenager in Amersham at the time of the murder. \nThe talk will be in the Museum’s Woodcock Room which on the first floor\, accessed by a platform lift. There is more information about accessibility in our access statement here. Tracing the legend of St Rumbold from its Anglo-Saxon origins through the medieval pilgrimage era and into the present day\, the talk examines how stories become attached to places and how those meanings evolve over time. \nDrawing on folklore studies\, local history and personal fieldwork\, Edward Constantine-Cort investigates the relationship between landscape\, belief and community memory. DESCRIPTION:Buckinghamshire holds many connections to the East India Company\, from merchant officials resident in the county to a Company ship named Buckinghamshire. But what were the early foundations of this famous and notorious company? Before the East India Company and the British Empire\, 16th- and 17th-century merchants\, pilgrims and outcasts ventured to the great kingdom of the Mughals in search of better fortunes. This collision of worlds precipitated a tempestuous period of globalisation spanning from the Japanese silver trade to the slave trade in the Americas. \nJoin cultural historian Dr Lubaaba Al-Azami in tracing this early relationship between two nations – one a European pariah and one an Indian superpower – whose cultures remain linked to this day. \nThis free talk will take place at Buckingham Library.
